Pampas Grass

A couple of years ago my husband and I were in San Diego spending a few days away at the amazing Rancho Valencia Hotel (a post for another time). We decided to venture out and have lunch outside of the resort. My husband was driving and we were both admiring the mansions, horse stables, and beautiful scenery when behold on the side of the road pampas grass!

I couldn’t believe how tall and beautiful it was. The feathery plumes were blowing in the breeze and they looked so soft and pretty. I needed to photograph them; or better yet, I needed to cut some and take them home. So I quickly and loudly yelled, “PAMPAS GRASS!!!!” My husband glanced over at me with the most peculiar look on his face and said, “what did you just call me?” Insert hysterical laughter! I’m sure you an imagine what he thought I said. LOL

Well I did cut down some of that pampas grass and took it home, added it to a vase and then vacuumed up all the droppings every day after that. Let me tell you the stuff is messy and if you have allergies forget it! Eventually I gave up and threw it away. I want you to know you don’t have to have messy pampas grass, or pull over on the side of the road and cut it down, keep reading and I’ll share two easy tips to having beautiful mess free pampas grass.

The Ritz Carlton’s Pampas Grass Fall Display

I have since learned a bit about pampas grass and now I enjoy its pretty feathery plumes all throughout fall without the mess and the sneezing. The first thing I learned is just to buy dried pampas grass. It’s really inexpensive and lasts year after year. I bought a lovely bunch of 80 stems of dried pampas grass for around $15 here’s my link https://amzn.to/3Uc5yb5 if you want to check them out.

The second thing, dried pampas grass will grow; literally the plumes will fluff to twice their original size! All you have to do is head outside, shake the stems upside really good then add the loose stems to a vase and leave it in the sun for 24 hours and what the fluff they’ll have grown twice their size! See my before and after pictures below

Before 24 hours in the Sun
After 24 hours of sun

Once your pampas grass has done some sunbathing, you will want to preserve the fluff by liberally spraying with an aerosol hairspray. The hairspray will also keep the pampas grass from shedding, so be sure to cover it thoroughly. Once the hairspray has dried they are ready to be brought inside and enjoyed. I hope these simple tips helped.

This is only about 40 stems, above is 80
